ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different aspects of mind: the embodied mind that generates psychological transformation, the critical mind that obstructs it, and the foreground (left hemisphere) mind and the background (right hemisphere) ‘bodymind’ that co-operate or compete. Transformative mental processes arise initially in the right hemisphere. Mind-based topics addressed include attention, consciousness, cognition, thinking, language, intuition, insight, imagination, creativity, decision making, will and agency, humour, reflection and narratives – and how therapists can engage with them. Mental activity can be grounded in the felt sense, and cognitive balanced with affective work so that minds may be not merely re-arranged but really transformed.
