ABSTRACT
It is staggering to compare today’s world with that of over 10,000 years ago: humans were just another species on the Earth taking their sustenance from nature. Since that time, we have transformed much of the planet’s surface into an agricultural or managed landscape. This is not to say hunters and gatherers do not affect their surroundings; they do, but not on the scale that agriculturalists and modern industrial societies have.
