ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the economic crises such as the global financial crisis (GFC): this crisis was designed and caused by humans. It focuses on two industry sub-sectors of the Indian Information Technology/business process outsourcing (IT/BPO) industry: the high-end Information Technology and software development industry, and the medium to low-end knowledge and business process outsourcing industry. The book also elaborates on the macro-level trends and impact of the GFC to provide an India-specific picture of the GFC and its impact. It also examines the role of various Human Resource Management (HRM) approaches that have been adopted by firms during and after the GFC. The book then presents the empirical component focusing on the specific impacts of the financial crisis on managing people using evidence from case study organisations from the Indian IT industry.
