ABSTRACT

In 10 Things I Hate About You, Julia Stiles's Kat is the hard-hearted bitch who everyone can think of reasons to hate. In Working Girl has already taken an antihistamine before crashing the business party where she hopes to meet Jack Trainer before her meeting with him the next day to make a business proposition that would change her life for the better. In The Holiday, Graham is drunk when he shows up in the middle of the night at his sister Iris's cottage, to discover that Iris has traded houses for the holidays with an American film editor, Amanda Woods. His drunkenness is the excuse for him to spend the night on his sister's couch now and then, but it goes beyond its usefulness as the wedge that gets him in the door, a couch, quickly followed by a place in Amanda's bed. Tipsiness is also the crack in his otherwise professional-book-editor, suit-and-tie, proper reserved Englishman armor.
