ABSTRACT

John Francis Maguire (1815-1872) was the founder and editor of the Cork Examiner (1841-1872) and an MP for Dungarvan (1852) and Cork City (1865-1872). He published The Irish in America in Montreal and London with D & J Sadlier and Co. on both sides of the Atlantic in 1868. The book is based on his travels and interviews with Famine survivors in Canada and the United States in 1866-67. He was a moderate, constitutional nationalist who argued in The Irish in America that Irish Catholics fare better abroad than in their native land when not subject to British misgovernment in Ireland.
