Charles Edward Trevelyan remains a contested and controversial figure within the historiography of the Great Famine. 1 Born in 1807 to a middle-class family in Cornwall, he was the fourth son of George Trevelyan, Archdeacon of Taunton from 1817 until his death in October 1827.
