ABSTRACT

Our skin serves an important dual function. On the one hand it keeps us in, separating our blood vessels, bone and other tissues from the rest of the world. On the other hand it connects us with that world, receiving information about temperature, pressure and pain. This information is crucial in allowing us to operate safely in our environment. Sensitivity to pressure, for example, is important in activities which vary from feeling the pile on a fabric to being aware of a table we may be leaning against.
