ABSTRACT

A sustainability approach does not provide what to think, but how to go about thinking-in the classroom, at home, in the laboratory … wherever.

Introduction

The education and research field is a large one. Education encompasses our very first steps in life and follows us through to retirement. The education and research field includes early childhood, primary and secondary schooling, higher education, specialized training, and research and development endeavors. Across all educational and research institutions, improvements can be made so that day to day operations promote sustainable development. These improvements include workspaces that optimize human interaction and productivity, water use and recovery, energy savings, materials use, and waste management. However, the dematerialized purpose of the institutions should also be to help students and research activities move society along a sustainability pathway.
