ABSTRACT

Careers today are in many ways without boundaries; they involve drastic shifts (geographical and content-based), improvisation, and the expression of personal values (Arnold, 2002). The definition of “career” has evolved with time, with career specialists still debating the term and its application in modern life. The human resources profession is an entire field of its own within both private and public institutions. Employees and the self-employed are concerned about how best to construe and manage their careers. Author John Arnold, in his article Careers and Career Management, prefers the following definition of career, which allows for a broad interpretation of both the objective and subjective elements of a person’s life including those activities outside of (but related to) employment:

A career is the sequence of employment-related positions, roles, activities and experiences encountered by a person.
