ABSTRACT

The basic techniques and rules of composition and awareness of light are timeless. This chapter discusses the time-tested techniques and approaches used by those that are now or eventually will enter into the Pantheon of Photography. The author talks about his travels and the hundreds of photo assignments he completed. The goal is to tell an interesting story through a series of dynamic photographs. If a single image is worth a thousand words, a successful travel photo essay has the potential to be exponentially more valuable. Something to keep in mind as we move forward on this quest is that, by the time the ink is dry on these pages, there will be new cameras and new photographic technologies. The objective is to emerge with the ability to create what a classic photo essay was meant to do: successfully convey a story through images.
