ABSTRACT

While many of the photographers cited in this chapter are not "travel photographers" per se, they all share a wanderlust and see or saw the road as an endless source of inspiration. according to the author, the First Great Travel Photographer was Felice Beato, who traveled with Robertson in 1851 to Constantinople where the latter opened one of the first commercial photography studios in the Turkish capital. Edward Curtis' work reveals a deep sense of respect for Native Americans and their cultures. His imagery, sound recordings, and films are helping contemporary Native Americans to rediscover and revive their language and culture. W. Gene Smith, Gordon Parks, Mary Ellen Mark, and David Alan Harvey are some among the many photographers discussed in the chapter. They have frozen unique moments and places in time with an artistic prowess that is worthy of being preserved for posterity.
