ABSTRACT

In any given travel photo essay, images from a number of photographic genres will be called for to tell the full story on a given subject. At the highest level, travel photography requires the widest breadth of photographic skills and knowledge for those who want to play and stay in the arena. This chapter presents the photographic specialties a travel photographer should be familiar with and the unique pieces of equipment that should be included in the checklist to pack when appropriate. Dramatic portraits are often achieved with a very shallow depth of field with the focus on the eyes. Professional car photographers working on location often take advantage of the magic hour and the blue hour – the times just before and after sunset – to show off their highly reflective subjects. Fashion and beauty often come into play when photographing higher end travel stories.
