ABSTRACT

In Chapter 10, Eileen B. Gottlieb presents a systems view of chronic illness. She focuses on three ideas derived from Bowen family system theory in an effort to understand the origin, expression, and impact of this chronic illness that includes the role of the relationship system and family emotional process. She describes chronic illness as a multigenerational process. Finally, she posits that chronic illness may be unpreventable. The management of the relationships around it becomes significant to the next generation.
