ABSTRACT

Image processing is concerned with changing the values of pixels within an image, either their brightness, or colour or the relationship between adjoining pixels to enhance contrast or sharpness. Although there are many software programs available for processing ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) images, such as Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, Gimp, Affinity Photo and ImageJ, this chapter concentrates primarily on the use of Adobe Photoshop and the integral Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). UV or IR images which display noise may well require a different amount of sharpening to a less noisy image. In order to retain the greatest amount of information for processing, it is advised to shoot raw files for both UV and IR photography. Many UV and IR images will be, by their very nature, low contrast, and will have a coloured tint which, depending on their eventual use, will need to be enhanced or removed in imaging software.
