ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we’ll explore an innovative and exciting way for students to incorporate multimedia into narrative writing: the use of images, videos, and audio files as tools for characterization. First, we’ll consider what this strategy is and then think together about why it can enhance the pieces students create. Once we’ve done these things, we’ll look inside a classroom where I helped students understand how to apply this strategy to their works. Finally, we’ll examine five key recommendations to keep in mind when helping your students use images, videos, and audio files as tools for characterization in their narratives.
