ABSTRACT

This chapter is the last of four largely parallel chapters which discuss the growth experience of the selected economies in this book. This chapter will entail an assessment of Malaysia’s development according to the analytical framework laid down in Chapter 2. It will first compare and contrast the country’s economy before and after its independence in 1957, in particular the status of Kuala Lumpur as an Islamic financial centre. Subsequently, the role played by legal, political, cultural factors and market infrastructure underlying its success will be discussed. The chapter will also consider whether the country is on course to meet its Vision 2020 goals to become a high-income country.
