ABSTRACT
‘If you can’t explain it – deny it’, can be a useful rule; though few of us now follow the behaviourists in denying consciousness, even though we can’t begin to explain why we have sensations. Matter is also mysterious; but at least it is not private, so we can talk about matter in ways denied us for discussing experience.
