ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a creative insight into how practitioners might explore the synergies between mathematics and second language learning. It draws upon some current and relevant theories to underpin the practical examples authors present in an attempt to illustrate the theory in context/practice. The chapter demonstrates how effective mathematical learning can be ensured with relative small amounts of second language. Teaching mathematical content and concepts through the medium of another language can offer an opportunity to revisit key ideas and concepts and consolidate their understanding in a different context. A social constructivist view of learning places the learner at the heart of the experience and active rather than passive learning or acquisition of knowledge is encouraged. Content and Language Integrated Learning is also often described as an educational approach in which a second language or language that is not the mother tongue is used as the medium of instruction to teach content in mainstream curriculum subjects.
