ABSTRACT

Before it is possible to discuss the factors which determine morale, we must know what this intangible element really is. The word is commonly used to denote the moral condition or behaviour of the civil population or troops. And when we say moral condition, we are not referring to their behaviour as judged by some abstract ethical standard, but rather to their firmness, steadiness, and willingness to continue in the fight or work upon which they are engaged. The word comes from the Latin mos, moris = custom; plural mores = manners, morals, character.
