ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two different projects in which theatre is a central and collaborative endeavour with people living with dementia in both the community and a residential care setting. The first case study focuses on The Island, a unique performance created with people living with dementia by the UK based group Small Things Creative Projects. The second case study is derived from interviews with the Enrichment Director of Punchdrunk and recently created a form of immersive theatre in a single care home. Funded by Arts Council England, The Island brought together six artists and 10 older people living with dementia living at Shore Green extra care housing scheme in Wythenshawe in Manchester. Punchdrunk has been creating immersive theatre experiences for people since 2000 their work in Greenhive Care Home was the first occasion they had worked in a care home setting.
