ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the development of the CO-researcher INvolvement and Engagement in Dementia (COINED) model using co-operative inquiry. The consultation stages of the development of COINED are shared together with how people living with dementia want to be involved in research and the challenges and opportunities that this presents for academics and organisations. Involvement in the design stage of the research was the most common experience of Inquirers. There was a sense of discontent amongst Inquirers, which was located in their experiences as participants at the expense of opportunities for wider involvement in a co-researcher capacity. Inquiry groups collectively agreed that the COINED model represents a wealth of opportunities that should be offered to people living with dementia as co-researchers in the field of dementia care. Inquirers acknowledged the logistics and practicalities of the research culture and the need to identify research priorities which reflect the wider existing and changing landscape.
