ABSTRACT

Returning to the idea that “Today, all romantic possibilities are on the table,” 1 is it really hard to imagine romantic choices today that would lead to gossip and speculation? What about Jessie Bernard’s examples? If a friend of yours decided to have an “open marriage,” would you be surprised? Would you talk to your other friends about it? Would you wonder if the couple were still in love? What if a friend, prior to his wedding, set a date with his wife to end their marriage in seven years? Would you fi nd that odd and talk with others about it? Would you wonder about the quality of their relationship?
