ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to summarise the most relevant information useful in producing an academic thesis. It is not a ‘how-to’ guide; rather, it presents helpful information and advice surrounding writing a thesis. Students should also consult their own university polices and guidelines. However, this chapter includes information on planning, preparing, structuring the thesis, and academic writing style. We present some common problems and challenges often faced by students in the write-up phase of their thesis, as well as an outline on managing the student-supervisor relationship and other support networks to aid smooth completion of the thesis. We outline information on completing a thesis with publication. This is a relatively new mode for completing a thesis, and we discuss some important factors to consider before choosing the type of thesis mode to undertake. Finally, this chapter provides advice on how to present the research as a report to organisations who have participated in the research.
