ABSTRACT

The understanding of problems and questions gained from the previous two chapters is useful when generating new ideas. The aim of this chapter is to delve into a rational approach to guide reasoning towards new ideas from problems and questions. It explores the remaining one of the four conceptions of original contributions as identified in Chapter 2: namely, an original idea that answers an unanswered question or solves an unsolved problem. With reference to the creative process in Figure 5.1, it specifically considers how to generate new ideas from the conflict representation of a problem (P-I) and how to do the same from a question (Q-I).
