ABSTRACT

This chapter challenges university enterprise educators to consider a deeper and richer notion of 'enterprise' and to reflect upon this when designing initiatives to engender entrepreneurial attributes and skills in their students and staff, and in their engagement in knowledge exchange with external stakeholders. It reviews the engagement gaps in enterprise development. The chapter examines the development of enterprise through both enterprise education and enterprise and innovation development, taking the South East Midlands area of the United Kingdom. It suggests that much of an institution's approach to enterprise education will derive from its two-way knowledge exchange activities with a region's business community and many of its economic development stakeholders. The chapter discusses the potential for interaction between cutting-edge research and the enterprise required to generate knowledge exchange relies for its sustainability on a dual-support system, combining project funding with formula-based funding that rewards performance retrospectively based on peer review and proven impact.
