ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to provide the reader with an overview of how soccer has evolved from being regarded simply as a recreational activity of America’s suburban middle classes to its current position as a ‘Major League’ franchised sport for both men and women. In order to position the sport in terms of its popularity, the chapter provides a synopsis of how and why soccer first established itself and ultimately gained traction within American consciousness and mainstream values. The literature presented helps to frame the proposition that participation on a soccer scholarship at university offers a viable and realistic avenue for career advancement, thus demonstrating a reconfiguration or adaptation of the American Dream.
