ABSTRACT

For comparisons between different texts to be undertaken with confidence, problems in arriving at definitive meanings of texts are considered. Ideas from Barthes (1977), Derrida (1977, 2002a) and Eco (1992a, 1992b) are discussed, and a way forward to analyse texts is suggested. This is briefly applied to Burns and Stalker’s book in preparation for lengthier analyses later on. Deciding on meanings of texts is problematic and not exclusive to interpretations of Burns and Stalker. Examples are given of interpretations of the work of other scholars which are significantly different from the original texts. Short comparisons of Burns and Stalker’s text are then made with its interpretations in three, popular management textbooks widely disseminated in universities. A minority interpretation of The Management of Innovation which includes more of the issues raised by Burns and Stalker is also presented.
