ABSTRACT

Representation of texts is a related issue, but separate from meanings in texts. Representations are influenced by the characteristics of the data and by the context and background, including the perceptions, values and opinions, of the researchers responsible for these representations. It was shown in the previous chapter that meanings of texts are fraught with difficulties, and according to post-structuralists can be seen as being open to the winds. There are also difficulties with the related problem of representation. Substantive problems can arise, for example, distortion, diversion and corruption. In this chapter issues are raised about the collection and representation of data. The analysis then moves to representations of texts, raising questions as to whose prerogative it is to establish their meanings – the author, the reader or recourse to the text itself.
