ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an insight on how to move from the accidental to the intentional management of projects by honing in on what Project Management as a discipline – separate and distinct from Instructional Design – is all about and what touchpoints exist between the two. It reviews the current state of project management as a field of study. It examines the synergistic relationship between project management and instructional design. The chapter identifies the skill sets common to both the instructional designer and the project manager. It summarizes some key considerations for successful instructional design project management. Project management as a field of research is in a state of flux but is making good progress. The scholarly literature is beginning to move beyond the tools and techniques of individual project practice to include consideration of new theories and the application of existing theories from other disciplines.
