Atthebeginningofchapter6wesawhowasentencecanbebroken downintoitsultimateconstituents,morphemes,throughanumber ofintermediatestagesofimmediateconstituents.Inchapter7we discussedtheproblemsoflabellingthedifferentclassesofelements thatcanactasconstituents.Asaresult,weareabletomake statementslike:asentenceconsistsofanounphrase,anauxiliary structureandaverbphrase,etc.ThenotionCONSISTSOFisimportant here,inthatitimpliesthatateachstagewemayexhaustively analysetheconstructionintoanumberofdiscreteconstituents,i.e. theconstituentsneitherleaveanyremaindernoroverlapeach other.
