Sofarwehaveconcernedourselvesmainlywiththeformofgrammaticalpatterns;butthesearenotanendinthemselves.Thepoint ofhavingdifferentgrammaticalpatternsistoconveydifferent possiblemeaningfularrangementsofwordsandmorphemes. Bloomfield(1935:166)referstothemeaningsoftagmemes,i.e. minimalconstructions,as"episememes";healso(1935:146)refersto themeaningsoftheirconstituentform-classesas"class-meanings". Wecanthusstudyeitherthesyntagmaticortheparadigmaticaspect ofgrammaticalmeaning.Webeginbyconsideringthelatter.
