ABSTRACT
Coaching with CARE is a pathway to teacher development that has had an enormous impact on our own teacher preparation program as well as the lives of the cooperating teachers we work with. The common development and relationship of the preservice and cooperating teacher is a key component of CARE. The CARE model is based in a practice view of teacher development. CARE is based on a few guiding frameworks for thinking about teaching and teacher development. The first is the idea of thoughtfully adaptive teaching. The framework of thoughtfully adaptive teaching helps us to explore how teachers might develop through practice-based experiences. The second framework is Grossman's framework for representations, deconstructions, and approximations in practice. The third framework is the problem-posing approach to preparing teachers. This chapter emphasizes that coaching with CARE is not possible without a caring community of coaches.
