ABSTRACT

The post-conference is the most important phase in the CARE coaching cycle. Some of the cooperating teachers have taken to sharing the notes they took during the observation with the preservice teacher in advance of the post-conference. Costa and Garmston wrote about the need for a coach to have a road map for a post-conference something along the lines of a game plan that a coach might have anticipating a difficult opponent. A game plan is constructed around main points to be addressed and some plans for contingencies. The road map needs to be constructed around data gathered from the observation of students, or from the dialogue between the teacher and the students, or from interviews you conducted with students, or from a close examination of the work artifacts produced during the teaching. Traditional approaches to planning tend to emphasize the movement from objectives into some kind of direct teaching structure.
