ABSTRACT

Theory of mind, or the ability to read others’ emotions and inner mental states, is a central skill that allows us to thrive in a socially driven world. In the absence of this skill, we would not be able to engage in social reciprocity or predict and make sense of others’ intentions and actions. Given the strong relation between social engagement and cognition, longevity, physical health, and mental health, it is clear that theory of mind is vital to our overall well-being (Antonucci, 2001; Antonucci, Fuhrer, & Dartiques, 1997; Berkman, 1985; Bowling & Grundy, 1998; Carstensen & Hartel, 2006; Vaillant, Meyer, Mukamal, & Soldz, 1998).
