ABSTRACT

The aim of the research reported here is to characterize the basic properties of human spoken language understanding; of the mental events that take place as the listener hears an utterance. The research is carried out within the framework of the claim that speech understanding is mediated by a set of central on-line processes, and that the primary goal of psychological research into speech understanding is to determine the properties of these processes.
