Thatsome101inscriptionswerefirststudied,andarepublishedforthefirsttimeinthisfascicule,bytheeditorhimself, willnotsurprisethosewhohaveknownhim.JobannesKirchner receivedhisdoctoratein1883,finishedtheProsopographia .Atticain1903,andhasnoweditedsome5300epigraphicaltexts inIGIP,nottomentionmanyinDitt.,Syll!;in1935appeared hisvaluableImaginesInscriptionum.Atticarum.InAugust 1935hearrivedinAthenstocontinueworkonthelastfascicule oftextsinIGIl'(thesepulchralmonuments),andbyJune 1936hebadcheckedoveralltheea.12,800inscriptionsinthe EpigraphicalMuseum,hadexaminedpracticallyalltheother knowngravemonumentsinAthens,includingthoseinthe AgoraExcavations,andhadtakenpartinanexplorationof Atticawhichturned-cpabout100moreunpublishedinscriptions (Hermes,LXX[1935],pp.461ff.;.Ath..Mitt.,forthcoming). Tocongratulatesuchascholarissuperfluous.Onethinksrather ofwhattheexampleofferedbyhissoundness,keenness,and vigormeanstodayforclassicalstudiesofeverysort,wherever pursued.
