ABSTRACT

BesidesthesyllogismKappalsodiscussesproblemsinvolvingother topicsoftraditionallogic,namely,concepts,judgments,andinduction.ForeachtopichefindsthespecifichistoricalsettingofAristotle'sviews,thedisregardofwhichhascausedamisinterpretation ofAristotlebytraditionallogic.Asintheeaseofthesyllogism,this historicalsettingisfoundintheworksofPlato.ThecorrectunderstandingofmanypartsofAristotle'slogic,Kappsays,"depends onunprejudicedinterpretationofPlato'sratherthanofAristotle's writings"(p.60).Forexample,mostofthe"difficultiesinAristotle'slogicofthejudgmentdisappearcompletelywhenweconsult Plato'sBophiste11"(p.58).Theproblemoffalsereasoning,as Aristotlepresentsitinthe"SophisticElenchi,""wouldbeincomprehensibleoratleastunbelievabletous,ifwedidnothaveadialogue ofPlato,theEuthydemu"(p.63).The"obviousdivergencebetweenArWtotle'snotionofinductionandthemodernconceptof intuitiveinductionn(p.82)isexplainedbyreferencetotheMeno. ThusAristotleisexpoundedprimarilyonhistoricalandphilological, ratherthanonanalyticgrounds.
