ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the personal consequences of victimization. We discuss the various ways that victimization can impact people’s lives in the short- and long-term, and highlight some explanations for why victimization often carries negative consequences. In the process, we provide an overview of important interdisciplinary research in this area (e.g., the Adverse Childhood Experiences study), and consider the various factors that might influence the severity of consequences that victims experience. We will also discuss the importance of coping responses and social support in helping victims recover and heal. The chapter concludes with a discussion of remaining gaps and challenges in the literature.
