ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about literacy to a group of geography teachers. Geography has its own nuance of communication. Literacy can be divided into three parts: speaking, reading and writing. This chapter presents a number of ideas for geography teachers to enhance their communication within lessons. Reading is a key for knowledge acquisition; it feels at times that reading has become considered geeky, unfashionable and has lost its relevance in the classroom. Skimming and scanning are two widely known approaches to speed reading texts; they allow students to read though a vast amount of text quickly and can be efficient and effective techniques to aid study. Writing is a fundamental skill necessary throughout our lives. When asking students to write a piece of work, consider using the First Attempt In Learning (FAIL) and Second Attempt In Learning (SAIL) approach. Applying this strategy has had one of the most positive impacts on teaching practice.
