ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three case studies: a soundscape for outdoors, designed to provoke empathy and emotion; a multipoint multimedia installation that complements traditional display, objects and panels, with personal stories; and personalised online content to deepen specific interests. The direct involvement of the local communities in the evaluation of the technology installations resulted in valuable feedback on the opportunities and challenges of the digital augmentation. Most importantly, it strengthened their bond with the museum institution as they appreciated the consideration and valorization of the institution for their opinion, contribution, and voluntary efforts. The curatorial team searched the museum archives looking for intimate personal stories specifically relevant to the site or the local area. The aim was to create a style of narrative that was personal, at times even intimate, as opposed to more factual, didactic, detached descriptions typical of an audio guide.
