ABSTRACT
An appreciation of relevant historical background goes a long way in understanding current world events. Many of the globe’s present problems, such as tension in the Middle East and ethnic conflict in Africa, have their roots, to a large degree, in the way in which the nations of the West for centuries have interacted with non-Western societies. This chapter traces the historical developments of these relationships.
