ABSTRACT

In the mirror of history Chapter 6 examined how the core issue of ‘choice’ emerged in the debate and how participants framed this issue within the concepts of individual freedom and intellectual independence. The economic and political environment of the 1990s offered new options to the humanist, while making other options appear outdated. This chapter will explore how participants discussed these options in terms of ‘ideal types’ of humanist work and often with reference to figures of the past.
