ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 examines the health impacts of transport and access. There are countless links between transport and health. Most obvious are the direct health consequences of transport modes, including impacts on respiratory health. There are also less obvious health consequences associated with transport’s primary role: to enable access to the things that comprise modern life, including employment, family and healthcare. This chapter draws on Australia’s history of car dependency, introducing the ‘cycle of automobility’ that has ensured the car is built, quite literally, into our way of life. We progress to provide a way forward for a healthy transport system in Australia. Our recommendations are underpinned by a key goal: to transition away from private car use while still enabling equitable access.
