ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 considers some of the other spaces and places that make up urban Australia. We concentrate on three types integral to a healthy built environment: employment spaces, healthcare spaces and school spaces. These are spaces of fundamental importance to us all at different life stages, and, as a result, have enormous potential to foster healthy practices. The need to accommodate a growing population and the marked shift away from government intervention in space and service management are two recurring themes in this chapter. We note the issues associated with long commutes, precarious employment, diminishing community-based healthcare and shrinking school grounds.
