ABSTRACT

Interest in practice-based research has increased as the field has begun to focus on the implementation and refinement of evidence-based psychotherapies. Two developments in particular have the potential to advance practice-based research: the increasing interest in forming academic partnerships for implementation research, and the availability of technology to facilitate practice-based research. This chapter discusses ways in which practice-academic partnerships can be mutually beneficial and can increase the feasibility of practice-based research. It then describes ways in which technology can support practice-based research, including through streamlined data collection and management, allowing for the use of pooled datasets. Finally, suggestions are provided for ways in which electronic-informed consent procedures can increase transparency and enhance clients’ understanding of how their clinical data is being used to advance knowledge and increase the effectiveness of psychotherapy.
