ABSTRACT

Part one of this second Appendix lists the 15 confirming Local Government Acts which from 1868 were defined as local Acts, together with the 139 places or local authorities in 1868-72 inclusive (many occurring more than once) whose Provisional Orders (see pp.116-18 above) were confirmed, and so given the force of law without the need for individual private Bill promotion. Other Provisional Orders had, prior to 1868, been confirmed by public general Acts.1 It should be noted that these 15 are the local government Provisional Orders, for which the procedures were authorised by section LXXV of the Local Government Act 1858; there were other separate provisional Act confirmation procedures, for example, for piers and harbours under the General Pier and Harbour Act 1861, 24 & 25 Vict. c. 45 (as amended by 25 & 26 Vict. c. 19), for which deposits were also recorded in Vacher’s annual Lists of Private Bills.
