ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 identifies major causes of unintentional related deaths and nonfatal injuries in the U.S., as well as estimated lifetime medical and work-loss-related costs. Ten case stories illustrate the successful application of social marketing efforts focused on behavior change to address major injuries in the U.S related to Gun Storage, Senior Falls, Sudden Infant Deaths, Unintentional Poisoning, Texting and Driving, Pedestrian Safety, Youth Suicides, Sports-Related Head Injuries, Drownings, and Workplace Injuries. Each case story includes three major sections: The Problem, The Social Marketing Solution, The Results. The chapter concludes with a summary of intervention tools attributed to the campaigns’ successes.
