ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some implications on the significance of bottom of the pyramid (BOP) businesses to global firms and future developments based on existing knowledge and case studies. A pivotal point about the BOP project is that it leads to strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) aimed at sustainable growth under competition through incorporating CSR into the company's main business and concentration of management resources. The chapter explains the four responsibilities of CSR, such as legal responsibility, economic responsibility, ethical responsibility and social-contribution responsibility. In strategic CSR, social contribution is important as a strategic element. Strategic CSR points out the importance of aiming to combine social needs and the company's main business. The chapter proposes issues that leaders might consider when entering the BOP arena. A BOP business must be linked to resolution of social needs. A BOP business leads to organizational innovation in creating new business opportunities.
