ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the Internet-based physical activity (PA) interventions. Internet-based PA interventions have been delivered by email-only or website portal-only or via a combined approach. Further, some Internet-based PA studies have also included non-Internet components, including face-to-face and/or telephone-based counseling, as well as concurrently using mobile device applications in the tracking and uploading of PA statistics. Some Internet-based PA interventions have also incorporated the concurrent use of mobile device applications for goal-setting and self-monitoring purposes. An increased proportion of the population is now using the Internet to acquire health information. Resulting from increased use of the Internet to acquire health information, greater-diversity has been seen in the populations seeking this information. The healthcare field is mirroring these trends, with Internet-based PA interventions implemented among patients with: cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other clinical diagnoses such as arthritis/rheumatism, angina, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and depressive symptoms.
