ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the innate need for belonging and bonding as the starting point to explore the topic of collaboration – an important element for learning in music. It discusses the aspects of forming and being in groups and examines a parent-child music group activity. An approach where dialogue and collaborative inquiry allow possibilities for working together directs the focus to group dynamics, removing the emphasis on managing behaviour, searching for a ‘right solution’ or applying ready-made strategies to solve problems. Bonding and belonging through music are fundamental to our human nature, which makes the group learning context a fruitful and interesting environment. The group is accepting of everyone as they are, and it trusts that the leader is competent to foster the process. In a music group for young children with their parents/carers, the non-verbal communicative competence shared by the group members is a means of participation.
